Most people assume locks are complicated. They aren't.

A standard pin tumbler lock — the kind on roughly 90% of doors in North America — works on a principle that was invented in 1848 and hasn't fundamentally changed since. Once you understand it, you'll never look at a door lock the same way again.

This guide will teach you how locks work, what the tools are, and how to open your first lock. No experience needed. No fancy equipment needed to start. Just curiosity and a practice lock.
#01HOW A LOCK ACTUALLY WORKS
ANATOMY OF A PIN TUMBLER LOCK
PLUG (rotates when correct key inserted) ┌─────────────────────────────────────┐ │ [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] │ ← Key pins (touch key) │───────────────────────────────────│ ← SHEAR LINE (magic happens here) │ ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) │ ← Driver pins (spring-loaded) └─────────────────────────────────────┘ ↑ Springs push drivers DOWN ↑ Key pushes key pins UP ↑ Correct key = all pins at shear line = plug rotates
[ ] Key pins — different heights, match the key cuts
( ) Driver pins — identical, spring-loaded, block rotation
—— Shear line — when ALL gaps align here, lock opens

THE KEY INSIGHT — WHY PICKING WORKS
Locks aren't perfectly machined. There's always a tiny amount of tolerance — a slight gap between the plug and the housing. This means when you apply rotational pressure, the pins don't all bind at once. They bind one at a time.

This is called manufacturing tolerance and it is the entire reason picking works. Expensive locks have tighter tolerances. Cheap locks have loose ones. This is why a $9 Master Lock opens in seconds and a $180 Abloy takes hours.
The tighter the tolerance, the harder to pick. Security pins (spools, serrated, mushroom) add false sets that fool pickers. This is what you pay for in a quality lock.
#02THE TOOLS — WHAT YOU NEED
TENSION WRENCH
Applies rotational pressure to plug. The most important tool. Without tension, nothing works.
$2–5
📍 SHORT HOOK
Single Pin Picking (SPP). Set pins one at a time. The classic technique. Most control.
$5–10
〰️ CITY RAKE
Raking tool. Fast, less precise. Great for low-security locks. Beginner favourite.
$5–10
🔧 BOGOTA RAKE
Triple peak rake. Very fast on cheap locks. Like the city rake but more aggressive.
$5–10
📦 STARTER KIT
Amazon 24-piece sets work fine to start. Covert Instruments or Peterson when serious.
$15–25
🔒 PRACTICE LOCK
Cutaway or clear lock. See what's happening inside. Essential for learning. Master Lock 140 or cheap brass to start.
$8–15

#03TECHNIQUE: SINGLE PIN PICKING
1
INSERT TENSION WRENCH — APPLY LIGHT PRESSURE
Insert your tension wrench into the bottom of the keyway. Apply very light rotational pressure in the direction the key would turn — usually clockwise.

This is the most important step. Too much tension = pins jam and nothing moves. Too little = pins fall back when set. The sweet spot is just enough to feel resistance.
Think of tension like holding a pencil — firm enough to not drop it, loose enough to write. That's the pressure. Most beginners use way too much.
⚡ LIGHT TENSION. THIS IS EVERYTHING. ⚡
2
FIND THE BINDING PIN
With light tension applied, insert your hook pick. Gently probe each pin from front to back.

One pin will feel stiffer than the others — it's under pressure from the slight rotation. That's your binding pin. The others will feel springy and loose.

Start with the binding pin. Push it up gently until you feel a tiny click or give. That's it setting. The plug will rotate very slightly. Now a new pin is binding. Find it. Set it. Repeat.
The click is subtle. Sometimes it's more of a feeling than a sound. Quiet environment + feel through the pick = everything.
🔍 FEEL. DON'T FORCE. NEVER FORCE. 🔍
3
SET ALL PINS — PLUG ROTATES — LOCK OPENS
Once all pins are set at the shear line, the plug will rotate freely. Apply a little more turning pressure and the lock opens.

Your first time will probably take 10–20 minutes on a cheap lock. Your second time maybe 5. After a week of practice on a basic padlock you'll be under a minute routinely. It's a skill. It gets easier fast.
If you feel the pins drop back and reset, your tension slipped or was too light. That's normal. Reset and start over. Patience is the whole game.
🏆 CLICK. CLICK. CLICK. TURN. DONE. 🏆
#04TECHNIQUE: RAKING (THE FAST WAY)
RAKING — FAST, LOUD, SURPRISINGLY EFFECTIVE
Raking is less precise but much faster on low-security locks. Insert tension, insert rake, and scrub it in and out while jiggling up and down. You're randomly hitting pins into position by luck and volume.

On a cheap lock this can open it in under 10 seconds. On anything with security pins it mostly doesn't work — you'll feel the false sets and get nowhere.

  • Insert tension wrench, light pressure as always
  • Insert city rake or Bogota to back of keyway
  • Scrub in and out with up/down motion
  • Vary speed and pressure — sometimes fast, sometimes slow
  • Increase tension slightly when you feel pins catching
  • Lock pops open or it doesn't — takes seconds to know
Raking is how most cheap locks get bypassed in real break-ins. It requires almost no skill. This is why we test for it in every review.
🌀 GREAT ON CHEAP LOCKS. USELESS ON GOOD ONES. 🌀
#05HOW TO GET BETTER — THE PRACTICE PLAN
📈
THE NOPRYZONE BEGINNER PROGRESSION
Week 1: Buy a clear/cutaway practice lock. Watch pins set. Understand what's happening. Open it 50 times. Then buy a cheap brass padlock and open it 50 times.

Week 2: Master Lock 140 (combo). Master Lock No. 3 (padlock). Both should fall in under 2 minutes by end of week.

Week 3: A real Grade 2 deadbolt cylinder in a vice. Takes longer. Teaches patience. Forces you to actually feel instead of muscle through.

Month 2: Anything with spool pins. Medeco clones, Schlage Grade 1. False sets will humble you. This is where you actually learn.

Month 3+: The community. r/lockpicking has a belt ranking system. Work through it. You'll have more fun than you expect.
The r/lockpicking subreddit belt ranking system is one of the best structured skill progressions on the internet. White belt through black belt. Start there.

#06FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FAQ.txt — NoPryZone Lock Picking FAQ
Is lock picking illegal?
In most places, no. Possessing pick tools is legal in the majority of countries and US states. The illegal act is picking a lock you don't own or don't have permission to pick. Always verify your local laws — a few jurisdictions do restrict tool possession.
How long does it take to learn?
Most people open their first cheap padlock within an hour. Consistently opening basic locks takes a few days of practice. Tackling security pins takes weeks. There's no ceiling — people have been doing this for decades and still learn new things.
Does picking damage the lock?
Done correctly, no. SPP leaves essentially no marks. Raking can leave minor wear over many attempts. Destructive techniques (drilling, forcing) obviously damage the lock. This is why forensic locksmiths can tell how a lock was bypassed.
What lock should I start with?
A transparent/cutaway practice lock first so you can see what's happening. Then any cheap brass padlock. Then a Master Lock No. 140 combo or No. 3 padlock. Do NOT start on your front door lock.
What's the best lock to buy if I'm scared of picking now?
Abloy Protec2 for padlocks. Medeco Maxum or Mul-T-Lock MT5+ for deadbolts. Our full ranked guide is on the reviews page. Short answer: avoid anything under $40 for real security use.
