The WordLock uses letters instead of numbers so you can set a "word" as your combination. The manufacturer says this is easier to remember.

There are 10,000 possible numeric combinations on a standard combo lock. There are approximately 4-letter English words — far fewer than 10,000. A targeted dictionary attack reduces the search space dramatically. Someone motivated and familiar with common words could work through likely combinations in minutes.

We set it to a common word. A tester who didn't know the word guessed it in 4 tries. The 4 tries took 90 seconds.

Sold at major hardware stores under the Defiant brand. ANSI Grade 3. Five pins, no security pins, no anti-pick features.

Standard residential installation. We picked it in 23 seconds on the first attempt. The strike plate it came with attached with 3/4" screws into hollow door trim — a single kick defeated the entire door assembly regardless of lock quality.
